Animal Matters

Animal Matters is a public access television show that discusses animal rights and humane education issues. Seventy-five towns are airing Animal Matters on a regular basis, representing 44% of Connecticut! If you are interested in sponsoring us in your local area, please contact us!

Animal Circuses
The lives of animals in circuses are investigated, focusing primarily on elephants. USDA inspection reports, employee statements and undercover video illustrate the misery of animals used in circuses.
House Rabbits
Representatives of the House Rabbit Connection discuss how to properly care for a companion rabbit and the efforts of the HRC to educate the public regarding rabbit care. Rabbits currently available for adoption are featured.

Dakin Animal Shelter
Animal Matters visits the Dakin Animal Shelter in Massachusetts. The program explains how this no-kill shelter began. Some of the animals available for adoption are featured.
Political Action for Animals
Julie Lewin, President of Animal Advocacy Connecticut (AACT), discusses efforts to create laws to better protect animals and the need for citizens to speak in a united voice for animals.
Turkeys
Animal Matters visits Green Haven Animal Sanctuary of Coventry, CT to learn about the lives of turkeys in factory farms, and the impression made by turkeys on the humans who care for them. Video footage from Farm Sanctuary is included.

Video footage from John Robbins’ Diet for a New America is featured. The impact on the environment that American farming practices have created are documented.
Factory Farming and the Environment
In this presentation to a Unitarian Church group, Humane Educator Neil Hornish discusses the devastating effects factory farming has in its contribution to air, water and land pollution.

Dr. Michael Greger, in a presentation to the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society, discusses the importance of Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet to prevent heart disease and vegetarian sources of Omega 3’s.
Lois Gibbs (2 Part Episode)
In this presentation at the 2003 Connecticut Toxic Action Conference, Lois Gibbs, founder of the Love Canal Housing Project and current president of the Center for Health, Justice and the Environment, discusses the story of Love Canal: How the residents discovered something was wrong and the steps taken to move the families from the area.

Zoe Weil, President of the International Institute of Humane Education, presents methods of discussing veganism.

Eggs
The egg production industry is explored. Featuring Miyun Park, president of Washington D.C.-based Compassion Over Killing (COK), and video footage of COK's open rescues of chickens in egg farms.
China Bears
An interview with Andi Mowrer of Animals Asia Foundation presents the practice of confining Asiatic Black Bears for the purpose of extracting bile for a variety of products. AAF video shows the creation of a sanctuary for the bears in China and the rescue of the first bears to the sanctuary.
Building Coalitions
Pattrice Jones of the Eastern Bird Sanctuary and the Global Hunger Alliance discusses why it is important for vegan groups to build coalitions with other social movements, and how this may be accomplished.
